Sony Reveals God of War Laufey, Handing the Series to Kratos’s Wife

The annual State of Play video presentation from Sony Interactive Entertainment has become a bellwether for the PlayStation ecosystem, and this week’s edition was no exception. Viewers from Stockholm to Madrid were treated to a headline act that few anticipated: a new chapter in the God of War saga that sidelines its iconic protagonist, Kratos, in favour of his spouse, Faye. Titled God of War Laufey—using her Jötunn name—the title was developed by Santa Monica Studio and marks the first time the franchise has moved beyond the Ghost of Sparta as its playable lead.

The game picks up after the events of God of War Ragnarok, casting players as Faye in a mysterious plane of existence called the Everywhen, where she must confront an array of deities and monsters from a fusion of mythologies. The creative direction is entrusted to Ariel Lawrence, a relatively new voice at the studio, signalling a clear intent to refresh the series’ narrative architecture. For European gaming analysts, the gamble is as strategic as it is creative: by shifting the focus to a character whose backstory was only glimpsed in prior instalments, Sony is betting it can deepen the brand’s emotional resonance while opening up mechanical and visual possibilities that Kratos’s established arsenal might constrain.

Beyond Laufey, the State of Play showcase offered a clutch of other reveals that underline the breadth of Sony’s slate. Crystal Dynamics, owned by Sweden’s Embracer Group, confirmed that Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis will launch on 12 February next year, continuing Lara Croft’s archaeological adventures. A sequel to the cult horror title Until Dawn was unveiled, relocating its ghost-hunting narrative to a tropical island setting. Meanwhile, Japanese publisher Bandai Namco announced Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve, an aerial combat sim set for release on 2 October 2026, drawing interest from Asia’s simulation-game community. A nostalgic addition, Stuntman: Hollywood, promises extreme driving sequences inspired by blockbuster films, though its release window remains vaguely “soon.”

Taken together, the presentation revealed a publisher in transition, prepared to experiment with its most valuable intellectual property while continuing to serve established fanbases. Viewed from London, the pivot to Laufey can be seen as part of a broader industry trend where legacy franchises are refreshed by elevating supporting characters—a strategy that carries both the promise of reinvention and the peril of alienating a core audience. Whether Faye’s odyssey will command the same devotion as Kratos’s remains an open question, but for now, Santa Monica Studio has guaranteed that the post-Ragnarok cosmos still has stories to tell.
