A violent tornado tore through Rome on Tuesday, triggering flash floods that inundated the Nomentano, Salario and Parioli districts and brought much of the Italian capital to a standstill. Torrential rain accompanying the storm uprooted trees, submerged streets and left some vehicles almost entirely underwater, the Italian news agency ANSA reported. The extreme weather extended well beyond Rome. Thunderstorms, heavy rainfall and flash floods also battered the regions of Friuli, Tuscany and Lazio, forcing local authorities to issue alerts and implement precautionary measures. In some areas, civil protection teams were deployed to monitor river levels and assist with evacuations.
