Five workers were killed and two others injured on Monday when an explosion tore through a rocket propellant production line at a Hanwha Aerospace plant in Daejeon, South Korea. The blast, reported at 10:59 am local time, triggered a fierce fire that prompted authorities to dispatch 100 firefighters to the government-designated security facility, located roughly 150 kilometres south of Seoul.

All five victims were found dead at the scene; their bodies were so severely damaged that identification has not yet been possible, according to local health officials. Two other workers managed to escape on their own, one suffering critical full-body burns and the other minor injuries. The precise cause of the explosion remains under investigation, but early indications suggest it may have been linked to solid rocket fuel or occurred during cleaning operations involving water, a procedure that can destabilise certain energetic materials.

Hanwha Aerospace’s Daejeon site is a hub for developing large-scale propellants and surface-to-surface weapon systems, including solid-fuel rocket motors for both military and space applications. The facility has a troubled safety record: similar explosions there in 2018 and 2019 already raised concerns over industrial protocols. Viewed from Washington, the incident underscores the hazards inherent in South Korea’s rapidly expanding defence sector, which has become an increasingly important supplier in global arms markets.

Following the accident, shares of Hanwha Aerospace fell 2.8 per cent and those of its holding company Hanwha Corporation dropped 3.4 per cent in Seoul trading, reflecting investor anxiety over potential production delays and reputational damage. Analysts in London note that the blast could prompt tighter regulatory scrutiny of defence manufacturing sites nationwide, particularly as Seoul aims to boost exports of advanced missiles and rockets. The outcome of the official inquiry will determine whether the incident leads to lasting operational disruption or merely reinforces calls for stricter safety enforcement.
